Hey! Unto you a child is born!

So we have made it all the way to the 6th Blog of Christmas and I have yet to mention once the true reason for the season. Often it is all to easy to get caught up in the card sending, gift buying, and food eating (I have been truly guilty of the eating this week) and forget the reason we celebrate,.

Every year at Christmas I have a few “Christmas themed” books I read and one of them is The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson. The Best Christmas Pageant ever is really meant for those in Grades 3rd-6th but I read it every year and it is a great reminder to me that Christmas is truly about the Birth of Jesus Christ. If you have never read this book I highly recommend it. I have been reading it for years and have actually seen plays based on it a few times.

In the book the Herdmans who are described as “the worst kids in the history of the world.” end up cast as all the main roles in Christmas Pageant at there local church. Everyone feels that the Herdmans will ruin the Christmas Pageant but in fact it turns out to be the best Christmas Pageant they have ever seen. The Herdmans hear the story of Christ’s birth for the 1st time and find the true meaning of Christmas.

The greatest gift any of us can ever receive at Christmas time or any other time is Jesus Christ. If it weren’t for God sending his only begotten son to earth to die on the cross for our sins, we would have no hope of eternal life.  Jesus did not belong to Mary and Joseph but was God’s gift to all of us, we must only choose to receive him.

So in the immortal words of Gladys Herdman . . .

“Hey! Unto you a child is born!”

That is the “gift” and the true reason for the season.

Luke 2: 8-14

8And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.

12And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
